The largest aspects of a stories exposition include the introduction to conflict, characters, and setting. Select one of these elements from your text so far. Discuss, in depth, your understanding of the element, and how you believe it will continue to develop and transform through out the reading.
For example: Focus on one specific character you have been introduced to. Discuss their description and character traits, as well as your opinion of the character so far. Then, share any predictions you may have for the character's future.
After posting, continue the conversation. Add detailed analysis to at least two other classmate's posts made. Continue responding until you feel the conversation has reached a point of resolution.
In the first few pages of the book you are introduced to the setting this story takes place on the spokane indian reservation. At the time of the first story we are told the location. This is shown when the narrator says, “Although it was winter, the nearest ocean four hundred miles away, and the Tribal Weatherman asleep because of boredom, a hurricane dropped from the sky in 1976 and fel so hard on the Spokane Indian Reservation that it knocked Victor from his bed and latest nightmare” (1). At that point we are also introduced to the main character and told that it takes place in 1976. I think that as we read on we will learn more about what Victor’s life on the reservation was like.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Clayton. You have a very good point and I think threw out the story we will learn some stuff about Victor and his parents that we would've never expected in the book. I have a good feeling that Victor is strong on the inside and is gonna be able to move forward even though he has seen so much negative in his life.
DeleteI also agree with you Clayton because so far we have seen negative things about Victor and his family. Victor doesn't show that he cares but on the inside he really does care on what is going on the reservation and within his family.
DeleteWe've already been introduced to a lot of characters and there are a lot of problems. I can see this because the uncles are fighting. This is shown when the narrator say, “Adolph and Arnold were her brothers, Victor’s uncles. They always fought.” (2). I think this is showing us that there are a lot of problems in this family and as the characters develop more we will learn more about what kind of problems they had on the Spokane Indian Reservation the lived on in Washington.
ReplyDelete“Its 1976 on a spokane indian reservation” page 1 the spokanes live in a small part in washington. It is a little crappy dump with a bunch of indians that just get drunk. As we read more we will learn more about the reservation and see it through Victor eyes.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you because there is a lot more going on then Indians that are getting drunk. There are negative things going on with his family which he is dealing with but he doesn't like to show it, but on the inside it is really affecting him.
DeleteWithin a few pages of my book The Lone Ranger And Tonto First Fight In Heaven I learned that the setting takes place in the Spokane Indian Reservation. I am told that in the beginning of the book that in 1976 a hurricane dropped down from from the sky crashing into the Spokane Indian Reservation super hard. “Well, tell them to get their goddamn asses out of my house,” Victor’s father yelled again, his decibel level rising to meet the tension in the house.” Victor’s dad really doesn’t wanna deal with the uncles fighting and also wants them no where near the house, as I continuing on reading the Spokane Indian Reservation is in Washington and has many problems that I am going to read more about their family problems.
ReplyDeleteIn the first few pages of The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight In Heaven, we are introduced to the main character, Victor. The year is 1976, and Victor is nine years old, and Victor's parents are hosting the largest new year's party in tribal history. At this party, Victor’s uncles get into a fight, not an unusual occurrence. “He could see his uncles slugging each other with such force that they had to be in love. Strangers would never want to hurt each other that badly.” (Alexie 2) As the fight continues, bystanders start to wonder if one will kill the other, but no one intervened. Alexie explains why “ Victor’s uncles were in the midst of a misdemeanor that would remain one even if somebody was to die. One Indian killing another did not create a special kind of storm. This little kind of hurricane was generic. It didn’t even deserve a name.” (Alexie 3) Alexie explains that conflicts between Indians are not taken as seriously as conflicts between white people. I think Alexie uses the hurricane as a metaphor to the fight between Victors two uncles. Although this hurricane is no different than others, it does not even deserve a name because the fight was between Indians. Why do you think this fight was ignored, because of the quantity of fights between the two, or because they are indians? I think this conflict is relatively ignored by others because it is “only” to Indians fighting. I also think the conflict between Victor’s two uncles will cause another conflict in a later chapter because they seem to not be able to be in the same room together without fighting, and both being related to each other and Victor, I think they will see a lot of each other.
ReplyDeleteThe geographical setting is a Spokane Indian reservation populated with a couple true Indians and a larger number of mixed Indians. The Main character is Victor who lives on the reservation and experiences all it has to offer from spiritual psychedelics to the drunken lifestyle full of sex and violence that is painted by Sherman Alexie. Victor's parents are divorced and don’t really offer any good role models for their son to look up to “I dreamed my father dancing with all these skinny hippie women, smoking a few joints, dropping acid, laughing when the rain fell.” (Alexie, 31) instead they gave him bad memories and traumatic experiences, however, there's still much more to discover about Victor's childhood. I predict that in the next chapter Victor will share more of his perspective on life and how his father leaving changed him.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I feel like we only know a little bit about victor and there is a lot more to know about him. Victor is about to get very open with the readers and I feel like we are about to learn a lot about him in these next couple chapters.I wonder where Victor will end up in the middle of the book. I wonder if he will still be with his parents???
DeleteI also think a future chapter will deal with the effect of Victor's father leaving had on Victor. I think the effect of his father leaving was likely a defining moment in his life, and it pushed Vitor the wrong way.

ReplyDeleteIn the beginning of the book we learned a little about a boy named Victor, Victor is a very happy and nice kid. You would think he lives a very normal life, but that is wrong. Victor was raised in a Spokane indian reservation. In this place Victor isn't exposed to the best role models. He also doesn't have the best parents either. In the book it says “Victor lay between his parents, his alcoholic and dreamless parents, his mother and father”(pg 10). This quote shows the type of life Victor is exposed to. Drugs, alcohol, Violence, Victor sees it all and doesn't know right from wrong. I predict Victor overcomes what he sees from his parents and learns from it and moves on. What do you think Victor will do?
I think Victor will have a very hard time overcoming all of the issues involved in growing up on the reservation. I think this because numerous times alcohol/drinking is mentioned/thought of more like an unavoidable career ending injury to Indians. Victor also dreams of drinking some day. “Victor dreamed of whiskey, vodka, tequila, those fluids swallowing him just as easily as he swallowed them.” (Alexie 7) Because Victor is already dreaming about drinking away his problems as a kid, I do not see him overcoming his parents or the “tribal tradition”.
DeleteI'd support your prediction because later in the book one of victors friends asks for a beer and Victor replies "Hey, we don't drink no more, remember? how about a Diet Pepsi?" so even though in the beginning it's kind of confusing to determine what Victors future holds, you get to see what choices Victor makes and you also get an idea of why he makes the decisions he makes based on his past.
