Which character in your novel do you identify with the closest, or which character do you have the hardest time identifying with? How does this influence your reading? What characterization led you to this conclusion?
The main character victor i have a hard time relating to. He is in a completely different culture then I am. He is around drugs and his dad has left him. We learn about Victor’s father leaving them in chapter three. The author shows the cultural differences and him leaving when he says, “”on a reservation, indian men who abandon their children are treated worse than white fathers who do the same thing. It’s because white men have been doing it forever and indian men have just learned how” (P34). In my life I can’t imagine my dad not being around and how hard it would be this is why i would have a hard time relating to him
I definitely see how you and i cant relate to Victor not only does he have ten thousand problems. But he live in an environment that is nothing like we ever heard of
I agree with you clayton. you have a very good point. 90% of people from km don't go through what Victor goes through on a regular day. He has grown up not knowing from right and wrong and our parents are very responsible compared to his. He is starting to grow up to be just like his father that left him. I wonder if he will turn his life around.
I agree with you Clayton Victor has had a rough life. He is growing up around not very good role models because his dad is no longer in life and his mom and him really try hard to have a close relationship but it doesn't always seem his mom is there for him. Hopefully he will be able to change his life around and make it better for himself.
I think I have the hardest time relating to Victor. It doesn't really affect the way I think about the book or even how i read it. I just think the way he acts and things are totally different. The main reason why I think this is on page 31 Victor said “some night i would fall asleep to the sound of my parents lovemaking” I think this was very strange/disturbing when i was reading this I thought to myself “what the hell is wrong with you” But I guess his culture is so different from ours that I just don't understand him.
I agree, I also have a hard time relating to Victor, and I also do not think this has an effect on how I read the book or my view on the situations Victor is put into. However, not being able to relate to the Indian culture may have an effect on my understanding of the book.
The young boy Victor in my book have been the most important characters so far he has many family problems Victor's parents are very bad they don't take care of him or help him victor is getting himself in an hole because will his family is fighting getting drunk etc victor and his friends find an new drug and want to try it this shows that his parents are very irresponsible I have an very hard time relating because my parents ain't like victors and victor's dad left him so it's getting worse and worse in Victor's life
I totally Agree with you Sam. I can see how you cant relate to him because victor lives a totally different lifestyle then us. Our parents treat us very good and his don't care about him. His dad has left him my dad hasn't. I wonder if he will turn his life around.
I agree, I also have a hard time relating to Victor because the environment and culture he was raised in is completely different from what I was raised in.
even though were comparing two entirely different ways of life can you guys still see how certain things are universal? for example, how he witnesses his parents fight, wanting to differentiate from the majority...etc.
I personally feel that Victor's story can be revalent no matter what lifestyle you have adapted too. We all struggle to find our identity and figure out a place in this world where we feel we can belong. However, Victor has seen and experienced modern reservation life of a typical indian and he knows that it’s not what he wants, hence the abstaining from alcohol and trying to have a spiritual journey from psychedelics. He chooses not to follow the way of his mom/dad/family and peoples, instead he wants to find something deeper. Victor just like any other adolescent is trying to discover his place in the world and that’s something that everyone experiences in life, so although it’s two entirely different cultures we still share some of the same problems.
I have a hard time relating to Victor because of the vastly different lifestyles we both live. Victor lives/lived on an Indian reservation in Washington, and I live in a suburban neighborhood in Dousman Wisconsin. A big example of the difference between myself and Victor is how many of the Indians on the reservation are considered drunks, whereas in my “neck of the woods”, there is not very many people that struggle with alcoholism, and those who do usually find help in one form or another. Even Victor’s own parents could be consider drunks, “ His mother and father breathed deep, nearly choking alcoholic snores.” (Alexie 9).This quote backs up the idea that alcoholism strongly influenced Victor’s life. I think the author mentions alcohol so much to help accommodate the reader to the real struggle many Indians face. Another event that very likely impacted victor's life was when his father left. I can not imagine what kind of an effect a father leaving would have on his son, especially in a society where alcoholism is present everywhere. I think Victor’s father leaving was likely one of the events that pushed Victor towards alcoholism. What do you think? Was his father leaving one of the main culprits of Victors alcoholism, was it mainly because that was the culture on the reservation, or was it something else?
In the book The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight In Heaven Victor the main character is someone I have difficulty relating to. Victor is the type of boy that is always around bad examples and his parents aren't responsible. Victor and his friends want to try new drugs and he is starting to grow up like others in the indian tribe. Victor also witnesses many problems between his parents, One example of this is when he said, “ I stood back and watched my parents argue. I was used to these battles. When an indian marriage starts to fall apart, it's even more destructive and painful than usual.”(pg 32). My parents are very responsible and want me to go far in life. Unlike Victor’s parents who seem to not care where he goes and how good of role models they are to him. I wonder if Victor will turn his life around and realize how this will affect him in the long run. Victor is the type of kid where he isn't stuck like this he has a very good chance to turn it back around and head on the right track.
hey J.D. can you relate to doing something that maybe you weren't supposed to do with a group of your friends? similar to when victor and his friends tried a new drug.
The character I have a hard time relating to is Victor because his life at the reservation is totally different from what I live in. Another thing I have a hard time relating to Victor is his dad left him at a young age. I learned that in Chapter three where it says “By the time the divorce was final, my mother was quite possibly the most beautiful woman who ever lived.” Meaning basically all Victor had was his mom. I couldn’t imagine not having my dad in my life because we have such a close relationship but then looking at Victor's relationship is totally different. He’s got a brave side to him because I couldn't live without both my parents.
The character I had a hard time relating to was Victor because his life is completely different lifestyle then mine. He lives on a Indian Reservation and drinks all the time. He also does drugs because in the reservation it is considered normal. I have a difficult time relating with victor because of what his parents did to him. They have abandoned him at a fairly young age for him to look after him self. Forcing victor to mature at a very young age. That is the one thing I couldn't do by myself, I would get lost and have nobody to look up to if my parents left me at a young age.
