In particular, I did not enjoy reading this book because it seemed to lack a traditional story line, and had no real climax, and it also did not have a conclusion or a main point/conflict. There is many different conflicts in these stories, with addiction/alcoholism being the most common throughout. An example of the alcoholism on the reservation comes early on, when Victor is dreaming of alcohol as a young kid, “Victor dreamed of whiskey, vodka, tequila, those fluids swallowing him just as easily as he swallowed them.” (Alexie 7). The alcoholism is present from the get-go, being mentioned on every page of the first story Every Little Hurricane, and clearly establishing that alcoholism is a very big issue on the reservation. Another issue mentioned is the racism. Again in the first story Every Little Hurricane, the racism makes an appearance; when Victor’s uncles get into a fight. “He could see his uncles slugging each other with such force that they had to be in love. Strangers would never want to hurt each other that badly.” (Alexie 2). As the fight continues, people looking on began to wonder if one will kill the other, but no one intervenes. Alexie explains “ Victor’s uncles were in the midst of a misdemeanor that would remain one even if somebody was to die. One Indian killing another did not create a special kind of storm. This little kind of hurricane was generic. It didn’t even deserve a name.” (Alexie 3). This quote shows how the Indians are separated from the rest of society, and actually have their own rules. These are both big problems, but instead of a success story, these stories are mainly about the bad things that occurred from these issues. Although it is a good thing to bring these issues to light, that is all that is done, and the story doesn't build upon any particular story, it more or less restarts every chapter. I think most would agree that reading an entire book about the same issues displayed in many different stories could/did become uninteresting very fast, especially when there is no overarching story line that completely connects all of the stories.
I did not enjoy the book it was confusing and I didn't like how the characters were and by the time I finished it I felt like I wasted a week and a half of my life. For example when they said “I was conceived during one of those drunken nights, half of me formed by my father’s whiskey sperm, the other half formed by my mother’s vodka egg. I was born a goofy reservations mixed drink, and my father needed me just as much as he needed every other kind of drink.” I found it disturbing and unnecessary. I found most of the characters hard to relate to and just fake.
I did not like the book at all, it seemed like it repeated its self a lot and their was no "Big Picture" just a bunch of smaller, not as important stories that didn't have a big affect on anyone or anything in the story. Like when they brought up Julius Windmaker, he did not have an extraordinary impact on the plot or any of the characters. it just mentions how he was a good basket ball player and then he started to get drunk every day and turned out like the rest of the Indians on the reservation. that is just one of the many unnecessary short story's in the book, there are many more.
I agree, all these small stories did connect, but they did not form a big picture. Because it lacked an overall story it makes it hard to become very invested in the story.
Personally i very much disliked this book mainly because it's way to depressing thought out all of the stories. There's nothing that makes you want to read more because there's no climax and no point that the book is trying to prove. But the only thing that is thought out all of these stories is the problems alcohol and addiction can bring to a person. “Victor dreamed of whiskey, vodka, tequila, those fluids swallowing him just as easily as he swallowed them.” (7). This quote sums up every indian in this book. In all of these stories I could not find a personal connection to any of them. I would not recomend reading this unless you have to.
I agree, there is nothing that really makes you want to go on to the next chapter, meaning it was ended up just being a very repetitive collection of stories.
I agree, I felt like every time I opened the book I was wasting my time. I could never relate to the book and at one point I would feel like I knew what I was reading and then the next chapter would come and I was so lost.
Personally I didn’t enjoy this book because it really did not show a “Big Picture” or an outstanding ending of the book. There was nothing that made me want to keep reading on because there wasn’t anything that excited me while reading. I want to read a book that makes me want to keep reading on and actually having a climax in the book. There was many different conflicts/problems going on the reservation. “And of course, Victor dreamed of whiskey, Vodka, tequila, those fluids swallowing him just as easily as he swallowed them.” (Alexie 7) This quote shows that there is a lot of drinking going on at the reservation, starting at young ages Victor is only five years old. Shows how much drinking and drugs are very common on the reservation. “Adolph and Arnold are fighting again,” Victor’s mother said. Adolph and Arnold were her brothers, Victor’s uncles. They always fought. Had been fighting since the very beginning.” (Alexie 2) “Well, tell them to get their goddamn asses out of my house,” Victor’s father yelled again, his decibel level rising to meet the tension in the house.” (Alexie 2) This quote describes how their family isn’t that correlated because they are always drinking and getting drunk or they are fighting, so Victor is around not such good role models. That's why Victor turns out to be the kid he is because he doesn’t have anyone to be close with or to talk too.
I did not enjoy this book very much. Mainly because it was hard to follow in the time lines and what was happening in the paragraph. It also was not very exciting in the fact that there wasn't a story to get into. Instead there were multiple stories that you couldn't get involved with he main character. This shows when victor is in the middle of a hurricane and he goes back in time when he tries the drugs that his friends gave him.
Personally I did not enjoy reading this novel. It was not my type of book and I felt as if it was kinda pointless. Throughout the book Alcoholism was a huge factor and It got old. There was no exciting parts in the book and I felt like every time I opened it I didn't enjoy reading it. I hate reading a book I don’t like because then it makes me not wanna read another book because Im scared im gonna dislike it. I love reading a book where it's exciting. This book was different and i'm not use to this type of book. Every chapter I felt like I would just get lost and get confused cause the setting would change and everything would be different. The book never had a climax, it didn't even have a conclusion. The book revolved around alcoholism and one example of this is when it says “ I was born a goofy reservation mixed drink, and my father needed me just as much as he needed every other kind of drink.” (pg 27) Victor felt as if alcohol was just important to his dad then his own kid. I could never relate to this book and I did not enjoy reading all this. During the final book discussion I realized that none of us could relate to this book so we all felt kinda lost.
I would not recommend this book to many people, speaking honestly I can say i'm confident that I took absolutely nothing away from this book and felt no more accomplished on the last page as I did the first. It wasn’t excruciating to read but I definitely felt like I was wasting my time and desired to read one of the other books that maybe had something fascinating to offer the reader. As opposed to a multitude of flat stories that are stagnant throughout the chapters which makes it feel as though impossible to make any progress through the book. Didn’t like.

DeleteI agree its very had to read a book that you cannot relate too. It was not a good book and it was very disturbing.

ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said i personally think that all of the small stories just made the book more confusing

DeleteI agree with what you stated because the book kept going in circles and even sometimes you couldn't follow the story line.

DeleteI agree, the way the author wrote short stories instead of one long made it not have a climax which made it very uninteresting...
